k.hendrix: Reuse / Recycle / Renew
MEET MADISON BUYER DESIGNER: Kimberly Hendrix – k hendrix
What inspired you to jump into fashion?
I have been a fashionista since birth because my mom loved fashion, but I did not pursue this career until just a few years ago. Before that I was in another creative field, interior design.
What makes k hendrix different from other collections?
My collection is a unique vision of luxury wear and resort wear and street wear all in one. At first glance my pieces seem to be made for special occasions because of all the hand detailing, beading etc; and of course I love dressing people for special occasions, but every time I create a new piece I envision someone wearing it over jeans and a tank top. That is how I wear them and I get compliments every time.
As a designer, what are your most difficult challenges?
The most difficult challenges as a designer are definitely getting funding. I fund my own line by working as a seamstress and pattern maker for other designers. It pays the bills but leaves me little time to work on my own collections.
What do you find most rewarding?
I love seeing people wearing my pieces. Whether it is just a piece used in a photo shoot or editorial or a custom piece I have made for someone, I love seeing people feel beautiful and sexy in my collection.
Who is your primary target audience?
Actually my target audience is such a wide range, from 15 to 50. Of course when talking to buyers I tend to talk in the 18 to 35 range because the pieces tend to be higher priced and that is actually my target market, but I have sold pieces to or custom made pieces for all ages.

What’s in store for k hendrix customers in the near future?
Recently I have combined the two lines I work on, “hello fabulous by k hendrix”, my more urban line and “k hendrix couture” into one all audience targeted line, “k hendrix”. My goal is to make my pieces more accessible and to push the more rock and roll feel of my line creating an every day couture collection. Showing people that they do not have to wear the pieces just for special occasions and like beautiful jewelry they are perfect for every day. I am adding a lot of ready to wear pieces to the fall collection as well to round out the looks. Lots of funky skirts, blouses and pants. I am also starting “couture for rent” a rental program for my more elaborate couture pieces so that they can become available to everyone.
