PFW Emerging Fashion Designer: Devonation
Interview with fashion designer and artist, Devon Yan Berrong. Devon was one of the talented designers showcase at Catapult, Portland Fashion Week’s Emerging Designer competition.
Describe your line Devonation. Who is your ideal customer?
My ideal customer would be anyone with a youthful spirit seeking to dress with style and comfort. I don’t want to put a limit on my fashions, I just want to make the customer feel beautiful and comfortable wearing my designs. DEVONATION is my expression of my artwork into fashion.
How long have you been designing apparel?
More than 10 years. In Hong Kong, I designed for other companies, but now I am designing for myself and for those who seek my style.
What motivated you to choose a career in fashion?
Very simply, I love fashion and it is just another way for me to express my artist vision.
What is your inspiration for your line?
Trying to take simple colors and make them edgy and transform styles used before into my own unique and carefully designed style. I love taking a military/private school uniform and turning into something that a male or female will want to wear and feel sexy.
Where do you see Devonation 5 years from now?
Right now I am focused on today and what will inspire me tomorrow will come to me when it is meant to be. This is how I work with my paintings and my fashion designs. At some point in my career, I would love to have a couture show, but again, it all depends on how I am inspired at that moment within my life.
Though I don’t like the attention placed upon me, I have to admit I like it when people stop me on the street to comment about what I am wearing. I enjoy wearing something and designing something that has not been seen before, but still is something that I and anyone else would feel confident and comfortable wearing.
