Finally a Practical Dress
Pockets are perhaps the most underrated of all clothing details, and yet probably the most useful. Let’s be real, everybody loves pockets—but unfortunately, in yet another triumph of fashion over comfort, it’s painstakingly difficult to even find a dress you can sit down in, let alone one with pockets. So when I recently discovered Anar Couture, from designer Rana Ghezelayagh, I was immediately impressed with the bold pockets sewn on to the front of some of her designs. What the pockets represent in the larger context of her style is their tasteful blend of comfort and fashion: the dresses are at the same time chic and utilitarian. In a culture which seems to be telling us that more skin equals more beauty, Rana’s indie designs contradict this line of thinking as her dresses are flattering without revealing much skin.
Practicality though, as we all know, is not the only thing that makes a dress worth wearing, so it is ultimately her smart blend of silk and a few cleverly placed touches of color that makes the line stand out. The unique cut of the dresses, seemingly influenced by the designer’s Iranian roots, gives the line a cool look—her dresses seem like they would be discovered in a nice boutique, perfect for someone looking to make a statement of individuality. So if you’re looking for a dress that shows off your body in a classy way, or just that new look to spice up your closet, check Anar Couture on Etsy or at www.anar-couture.com and be on the lookout for Anar Couture at Dubai Fashion Week F/W 2011.
